S.A unemployment
rate
Released 17th February 2026. The unemployment rate decreased from 32.9% in Q3 to 31.4% in Q4, driven by a contraction in the labour force (–128 000 people) and a modest increase in employment (+44 000 people), which resulted in a decline in the number of unemployed persons (–172 000 people).
Quarterly Labour Force Survey, Quarter 3: 2025
The expanded unemployment rate (which includes discouraged work-seekers) also declined slightly from 42.6% in Q3 to 42.1% in Q4. Despite this improvement, the number of discouraged work-seekers increased by approximately 233 000, highlighting persistent labour market vulnerability and elevated levels of underutilisation.
The Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) is a household-based sample survey conducted by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA). It collects data on the labour market activities of individuals aged 15 years and older who live in South Africa. However, this report only covers labour market activities of persons aged 15–64 years.
