The Africa Music, Arts & Culture Awards (AMACA), hosted by Career Indaba®, aims to recognize, celebrate, and promote the creative excellence of African Artists, Musicians, and Cultural Leaders across the continent. This event will not only elevate African talent but also serve as a platform to emphasize the economic and professional opportunities in the creative industries, aligning with Career Indaba’s mission to drive employment and professional development in Africa.

Objective
To establish the Africa Music, Arts & Culture Awards as a premier annual event that honors the best of African music, arts, and culture across the continent while promoting the creative industries as a viable source of employment and economic growth.

Vision
AMACA will unite artists, musicians, cultural figures, government officials, corporates, and young creatives to celebrate Africa’s rich cultural diversity, drive professional development in the arts, and emphasize cultural industries’ role in economic empowerment.

Nomination Criteria for AMACA 2026

  1. African Heritage: Nominees must be of African origin or represent African cultural heritage in their work.
  2. Impact and Influence: Demonstrated impact on their field of music, arts, or culture, showcasing how their work has influenced African audiences or the global perception of African culture.
  3. Originality and Innovation: Work must reflect creativity, originality, and a unique approach that advances African music, arts, or cultural representation.
  4. Professional Excellence: Evidence of exceptional skill, artistry, or craft in their chosen field.
  5. Cultural Preservation: Commitment to preserving, promoting, or innovating traditional African cultural elements or heritage.
  6. Community Engagement: Contribution to societal or community development through their art, such as mentorship, advocacy, or initiatives that create opportunities for others in the creative industry.
  7. Economic Contribution: Demonstrated role in creating employment or contributing to the economic empowerment of African communities through creative industries.
  8. Collaboration: Notable collaborations with other African creatives or projects that have elevated African culture on a global platform.

Category-Specific Criteria

Music Awards

  1. Afrobeat Artist of the Year: Must have released significant music within the eligibility period, achieving measurable success through chart performance, digital streams, or live performances.
  2. Emerging Artist of the Year: Open to young or new musicians who have shown exceptional promise and talent, with a body of work that has gained recognition regionally or nationally.
  3. Lifetime Achievement in Music: Must have a proven career spanning at least 20 years, with a legacy of contributions to African music.
  4. Music Innovator of the Year: Awarded to an artist or producer who has introduced groundbreaking musical styles, production techniques, or performance methods.

Arts Awards

  1. Visual Artist of the Year: Recognizing excellence in painting, sculpture, photography, or mixed media that embodies African identity or themes.
  2. Young Creative Talent Award: Open to emerging visual artists under 30 years old, with work that reflects innovation and potential for significant impact.
  3. Innovator in Arts and Design: Awarded to artists or organizations that have introduced revolutionary methods or projects in the visual or applied arts space.

Culture Awards

  1. Cultural Heritage Advocate: Recognizes individuals or organizations preserving and promoting African traditions, rituals, and heritage.
  2. Film and Theatre Excellence Award: For individuals or teams producing impactful films, plays, or performances that celebrate African culture.

Special Awards

Young Creatives Rising Star Award

  • Recognizes young individuals (aged 18-30) who have demonstrated remarkable growth and innovation in music, arts, or culture.
  • Nominees must present a portfolio showcasing their work’s originality, impact, and potential.

Cultural Industry Leader Award

  • For organizations or leaders promoting professional development in creative industries through training, mentorship, or employment opportunities.

Diaspora Influence Award

  • Honoring African creatives in the diaspora whose work has significantly contributed to the global recognition of African culture.

Cultural Legacy Award

  • Awarded to an individual or organization for lifelong contributions to preserving and promoting African heritage across music, arts, or cultural sectors.

Media Advocate for Culture Award

  • For journalists, broadcasters, or influencers who have elevated African cultural narratives through media, storytelling, or advocacy.

Nomination Guidelines

  1. Eligibility Period: Work or projects must have been completed or significantly active during the eligibility period (e.g., 1 January 2025 – 31 December 2025).
  2. Documentation Required:
    • Portfolio of work, including images, videos, or audio recordings.
    • Evidence of impact (e.g., metrics, testimonials, reviews, or citations).
    • A biography or profile detailing the nominee’s background and contributions.
  3. Nomination Process:
    • Open to public and peer nominations via the official AMACA website.
    • Nominees must submit completed nomination forms and supporting documents before the deadline.
  4. Judging Criteria:
    • Entries will be assessed by a diverse panel of industry leaders, cultural experts, and creative professionals, with public voting accounting for 20% of the final decision.

AMACA Cultural Legacy Initiatives

Nominees and winners will be encouraged to participate in follow-up initiatives, including:

  1. Young Creatives Incubator Program: Winners may mentor emerging artists or partner with the program to shape future creatives.
  2. Africa Arts & Culture Symposium: An annual platform to explore how creative industries can drive sustainable economic growth, leveraging winners’ insights and success stories.

These awards will culminate in the development of Cultural Legacy Initiatives, namely: 

Young Creatives Incubator Program, funded by the event, to provide mentorship, grants, and training to emerging African artists, musicians, and cultural creators.

Launch an annual Africa Arts & Culture Symposium as a follow-up to the awards, to explore how cultural industries can drive employment and economic growth in Africa.
